Where to Dock and Beach

Quiet Escape: Head north. Pull up to one of the sandy beaches, kick back and watch the eagles fly by. Renting midweek is a great option for those looking for a laid back experience. (Please note that when the river is low, we do not allow guests to boat north. The dock team will direct you upon arrival if that is the situation.)

High-Energy, People Watching: Head to sandy island(s) in the channel south of the railroad swing bridge in Hudson (locals refer to this as Beer Can Island). Boats of all shapes and sizes pull up to enjoy long weekends.

Staycation Vibe: Head South to Afton. The river widens just past the 94 bridge. Grab lunch at one of Afton’s riverside restaurants, easy docking can be found here for a small fee.

The DNR provides public porta potties up and down the river, including mile long island north of Stillwater.

Docking & Beaching Tips

Our crew is here to help you both when you leave the dock and upon your return.    Below are some helpful tips which will make docking and beaching both easier and safer.

DOCKING TIPS:

  • Prepare in advance: Check your lines, fenders, and cleats before approaching the dock; ensure they are positioned appropriately.
  • Assess wind and current: Consider the direction of wind and current and try to approach with the wind pushing your boat towards the dock.
  • Approach at an angle: Come in at a slight angle to the dock, allowing for better maneuverability.
  • Slow and steady: Never approach the dock faster than you’re willing to hit it.
  • Use reverse gear: Utilize reverse gear to slow down and fine-tune your position as you get close to the dock.
  • Line up your approach: Plan your entry point and line up your boat with the dock before committing to your final approach.
  • Communicate clearly: Our crew is there to help you dock.  Communicate with staff during docking and have a boat line ready to toss to the staff so they can tie your boat securely to the dock.

BEACHING TIPS:

  • Choose a suitable spot: Look for a sandy beach with a gentle slope to avoid damaging your boat on rocks or steep drop-offs.
  • Trim up the engine: Raise the engine slightly to prevent it from hitting the bottom when you get close to the shore.
  • Gradually reduce speed: As you near the beach, slowly decrease your speed to maintain control.
  • Use reverse gear: Once in shallow water, use reverse gear to help guide the boat onto the beach and maintain position.
  • Anchor if necessary: In deeper water, consider dropping an anchor to secure your boat’s position.

Important Considerations:

  • Visibility: Ensure good visibility from the helm to avoid collisions.
  • Passenger safety: Have passengers remain seated and secure while docking or beaching.
  • Local regulations: Familiarize yourself with local boat regulations along the lower St Croix National Scenic Riverway.
